Salton Sea State Recreation Area is one of the world's largest inland seas and lowest spots on earth at -227 below sea level. The Salton Sea has a shoreline of 130 miles.

Salton Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore of the Salton Sea. It has been a popular site for campers, boaters and anglers. Access to the sea for boating and water skiing is provided by Varner Harbor within the SRA. The site provides recreation opportunities for kayakers, campers, birdwatchers, photographers and hikers.

The types of fish found in Salton Sea is limited due to Increasing salinity in the Salton Sea basin. Tilapia are the most caught fish.

Layered clothing is advised as seasonal climates can be extreme. Salton Sea State Recreation Area now offers AT&T Wi-Fi Service also.

Some eighteen miles of Salton Sea shoreline within the Salton Sea State Recreation Area invites the camper, angler, swimmer and sunbather. Hikers will enjoy Ironwood Nature Trail which explores the shoreline between the visitors center and Mecca Beach.

Directions to Salton Sea State Recreation Area

It is 30 miles south of Indio on Highway 111. Located on the north shore of the Salton Sea, it is about a three hour drive from the Los Angeles or San Diego areas. From Los Angeles, take Interstate 10 east to Indio, take 86S exit then turn left at Avenue 66, then right onto Highway 111. Go south about 12 miles to the Salton Sea SRA Headquarters entrance. From San Diego take Highway 78 east, then left (north) on Highway 86 . Turn right at Avenue 66 and then right onto Highway 111. Go south about 12 miles to the Salton Sea SRA Headquarters entrance.
