Is a Homemade Windmill Right for Your Home?
May 6, 2009 - 3:47pm — GettingOutside
Guest Article By: Ryan M Johnson - When faced with today’s economy and global warming, it might be time to convert your house to a green source of energy by generating no cost electricity that will power every appliance.
If you’d like a reliable source of low cost electricity then you should consider purchasing or building a personal-use windmill capable of producing enough green energy for a single home. Surplus electricity generated from wind generators can even allow you to earn cash by selling energy back to your local power company.
Is the Time Finally Right for Personal-Use Wind Energy?
Wind turbines have come a long way from their original predecessors, and are now widely used to generate electricity in rural areas. A windmill generates two to three megawatts of power when running at full power. This doesn't seem like a lot compared to a nuclear power plant which typically generates a constant 500 megawatts but you can power your whole house using green energy.
If you are already plugged to a utility grid for electricity, consider installing a grid tie wind turbine that will feed excess electricity back into the grid. If your wind turbine produces more electricity than your household needs, the excess is sold to the utility company or stored in a battery backup system.
Although wind energy cannot supply America’s electricity demand alone, it can play a significant role as a sustainable and a clean green energy alternative to fossil fuels and nuclear power. Today, around 91% of Americas electricity is produced from coal, natural gas or nuclear energy.
The Future of Wind Energy is Now!
Windmill power is a renewable energy source because it will be with us as long as the sun beats down on the planet and the winds continue to blow. There may even be federal tax incentives that defray some or even most of the investment you’ll have to make. In the near future, windmills and other personal-use green energy systems will become more commonplace. Be the first on your block to take part in this green revolution.
