Maine Vacations The Way They Are Meant To Be: Affordable and Authentic

Back in 1976, Northern Outdoors ran the very first rafting trip on the Kennebec River, and the first rafting trip in the state of Maine. Folks thought they were crazy at the time. Rafting was in its infancy in the US, with just a handful of outfitters opening their doors from 1969 through the 1970s in the West and Southeast. In 1983, they changed their name from Kennebec Whitewater Expeditions to Northern Outdoors to reflect the company's new year-round direction.

Today, along with the best rafting in Maine, Northern Outdoors offers wide variety of outdoors activities and adventures.

You choose your perfect mix of fun, challenge, exercise, and relaxation on your adventure getaway. The team at Northern Outdoors can help you make it happen. Guided and self-guided trips activities for all ages and experience levels are ready to make your vacation the best it can be. Choose your lodging from a wide variety of cabins and camping options at Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort.

Whitewater Rafting

Rafting is Mother Nature's perfect rollercoaster ride. Whether you are a first-timer, family, or high adventure enthusiast, you'll find your perfect trip at Northern Outdoors. Northern Outdoors provides thrilling adventures with a professional staff dedicated to providing the best and safest outdoor experience on the water.

Best Time To Go

Northern Outdoors schedules trips every day from early May through mid October. The early season spring run off provides the most exciting whitewater in the Northeast. Throughout the summer, daily dam releases on The Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers guarantee excellent Class IV and V rafting adventures. The combination of magnificent foliage, higher water flows, and generally fewer people has made late season rafting in September and October a very popular choice for many of our guests.

Route 201 ... The Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway

Getting to Northern Outdoors in the Upper Kennebec Valley is easier than you think. It’s also an incredibly beautiful drive. The Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway is a snapshot in time.

Tracing the route of generations of travelers between Maine and Quebec, this segment of Route 201 is one of the most beautiful drives in the Northeast. Winding right alongside the Kennebec River, Wyman Lake, the Dead River and vast working forests, it is a spectacular drive revealing undeveloped ridges and islands framed by dramatic stands of white birch.

Whether you travel by car, motorcycle or RV, you’ll discover that getting there is almost as enjoyable as being there.
