Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" Program Is Now In Full Swing
February 27, 2010 - 2:25pm — Matt Kegelman
Our First Lady, Michelle Obama, is very smart indeed. She has made it her initiative to address one of the main health problems America is facing: Obesity; and now, in particular, childhood obesity.
She aims to make things happen for the younger generations, for her kids' generation. What she wants them to do is simple: Move! Not out of the way... She wants them to move while they are getting exercise!
And we think it's an important decision she is making to try to fund projects which will get kids outside for exercise! Kids need to find time to enjoy nature, wide open spaces provide room for the imagination to grow and for wonderment with the world's mysterious earth and biological sciences.
The "Let's Move" Initiative (and it's upcoming programs) is especially important to us here, because we know that there are two main places where kids can get exercise: Inside AND Outside. And if she is going to succeed, she is definitely going to have to get kids to take more of an active interest in outdoor activities, and abandon their time- and mind-capturing video game consoles! The only way to do that is to convince them they can have more fun doing something active and engaging outside!
Here's what she aims to do with the Let's Move Program:
- Give parents the support and help they need
- Provide healthier, more nutritious food in schools,
- Help our kids to be more physically active and motivated, and finally,
- Make healthy, affordable food available (in every part of our country)!
We sincerely hope she succeeds in her mission to bring the knowledge of health and wellness into young people's lives, so they don't have to undo years of neglect later on. The younger generation needs to wake up to the possibilities and the realities of their choices to get exercise or to remain sedentary. It's much easier to maintain a healthy weight and nutritional practices if you have been encouraged to do it the right way all along.
The outdoors present us with a wide variety of opportunities for exercises. Kids enjoy new experiences. If you want them to get exercise, without feeling self conscious about it, try showing them something new like a game or outdoor activity where they will be required TO MOVE! Getting Outside is healthy for one reason: It usually goes along with people in motion, people getting exercise, especially in the case of children!
Many children today, especially urban youth, suffer from Nature Deficit Disorder. Scientists are beginning to think that a lack of experiences with outdoor environments, like the wide open spaces afforded by our wonderful State and National Parks Systems, could potentially leave children with development problems (or put them at higher risk for attention-deficit disorder and attention-deficit/ Hyperactivity disorder). So we need to move on this one!
We need to Support First Lady Obama's Program and encourage our children that getting outside to have fun and play games or sports... exercising shouldn't be thought of as a chore (and we need to break this misconception among children). Rather, exercise should be just the opposite; something that just happens along the way, because you are having so much fun outside playing!
Michelle Obama says, "Let's Move" and GettingOutside.com completely agrees!
