Earth Hour 2010 - Turn Out the Lights, ....................... Turn Up the Hope

March 22, 2010 - 12:17pm — Matt Kegelman
Earth Hour 2010 is going 2B big! In the form of carbon release/ energy savings!

Let's hope that it's not too late... The world is changing, has changed... and it's becoming ever more clear to us that human impact on the planet will have a lasting and profound effect on the quality of life for future generations (and, perhaps, even for ourselves maybe 15 or 20 years down the road; and certainly another 50 years from now).

We will be impacted by the decisions our leaders make for us in significant ways. If we do not decide to go green, to begin to solve obvious problems (problems that are causing real climate change, destroying habitats and disrupting biological balances and eco-system stability), then our future looks bleak at best.

But there is still hope, pray thousands, even millions, as we prepare to turn off the lights, and turn up the hope... On March 27th, 2010 at 8:30 pm (local standard time, so one time zone at a time) people all over the world will turn off their lights and conserve energy, thus decreasing the amount of energy used on this historic day (we'll see by how much, and we'll see how many people get involved, how significant of a change can be made?).

The Science Behind It (The Need for Conservation and The Method)

To produce electric current, a form of energy which we can use to operate electronic devices, humans have invented technologies that will generate huge amounts of electric potential. Also known as Power! But we must be aware of what is spent up in creating that power. Resources. For hundreds of years we have been using energy sources which give off pollutants, and we still are using these daily:

Gasoline, Natural Gas and Oil (there are thousands and thousands of Oil and Natural Gas Power Plants in the world)

Wood and Coal (we use wood mainly to heat our homes, but it used to be a source of energy, when it powered steam engines; think about how many trees were cut down and burned to power the steam engines that built this nation over 200 years ago... the use of Coal is predominate and their uncontrolled emmisions are one the biggest problems we are facing as a global society, environmentally speaking).

And all of these ways we are creating energy have a lasting and severe impact of the planet's livability. The environment and the atmosphere is jeopardized and taken for granted (as stable) when we use these methods to produce energy, and it is now becoming clear that if we take them for granted for much longer, they will become irrepairably damaged as world climate becomes more and more unstable! So, people have reasoned, there is something that must be done: WE MUST STOP USING THIS MUCH ENERGY --- in other words --- We Must Conserve! (Resources should be better allocated, for just purposes of peace) But, don't just take it from me, hear it from some famous celebrities at the earth hour webpage.

And that is what Earth Hour is all about! Conservation, NOW! While we begin to work to create new methods of energy production which will not effect us negatively in the long term. We are hoping that it's not too late. That people will realize that, for now, we need to use less in the first place. We need to waste less (those lights, TV sets, and computer monitors that are on in rooms where they are not being used need to be TURNED OFF), and we need to value what we already have (a healthy, and relatively clean and stable earth, a global environment which can still be fixed)! There is still hope. I cannot say that enough, for I truly believe it. One day, peace will prevail.

We have invented alternative energy, and we are already beginning to think about ways in which society, business, government can be restructured so the human conditioned is bettered for all (and not at the expense of future generations and a sustainable, clean earth)! So join us please and sign the pledge today, to conserve energy on March 27th for one hour!

Here are some businesses that have pledged to do the same:

  • Hearts in Mind Counseling
  • Bloomberg News
  • AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals
  • Living Well Magazine
  • Kiddie Kollege
  • Isobel
  • GettingOutside.com

You can go to the earth hour website and sign the pledge, but more importantly, make sure you follow through on the entire message that is behind this global campaign: Practice Conservation and Resource Management (do not waste or squander). Thank you for doing what is good and right --- not only for others, but for our (future) selves as well!

From the GettingOutside.com team of environmentally concerned citizens.
