The Two Different Types of Exercise: Which Do You Prefer?
February 16, 2010 - 7:32am — Matt Kegelman
With the modern age of science and technology —with all of the useful information we have at our disposal and the new scientifically driven exercise designs and eating practices—there is no reason why we can’t all have the bodies we want.
But, the question is:
How well are you doing on your way to achieving the weight loss goals you set out for your 2010 New Year’s Resolution?
Do you feel like millions of other people out there: Somehow it seems—no matter what you try, year after year—you always end up falling short?
Maybe the weight comes off initially (in some small but significant part, or possibly you manage to loose a bit more) but then, in a few months, you begin to slip... and the weight is eventually regained. (Usually forgetting to exercise or giving up on a diet plan that is too demanding is the culprit.) And for you this seems like it’s almost inevitable?
Nothing works?
Maybe you signed up for a gym membership but only had time to go once every other week. Or maybe you feel like you don’t have the experience to fit in at the gym, and with all those sculpted and toned athletes pumping their irons, you’d feel out of place.
No worries...
If you wanted to loose a few pounds or even more, and you haven’t gotten off to the best of starts, then this series of articles—and the featured Outdoor Exercise Log Book—is just for you!
If you decide to take the treadmill route, check out and read these treadmill reviews to find the best options available.
See, we here at GettingOutside.com sincerely believe you can succeed – definitely you can! You can! – We just think that maybe you need to try a different approach! Here’s why you might need to re-think your e-tactics (your "exercise tactics" or your "approach to exercising" —when it comes to weight loss):
Exercising can occur one of two ways:
1) The first way is the way it’s more commonly thought of:
A grueling, sweaty and even painful gym workout—other popular conceptions of the term ‘exercise’ include treadmill or elliptical workouts—where you work yourself until you feel like you’re about to pass out, and in the morning, you end up feeling so sore you don’t even want to get out of bed!
And then there is the other way...
2) The second way people don’t often think of as exercise, because it is not nearly as agonizing.... but it most certainly still is exercise... It's doing the things we normally do! Let me further explain...
Every day we go about our lives doing things that require our bodies to work—naturally.
We have to get up, brush our teeth, eat breakfast, get to work, do our jobs, come home, make dinner, clean up... and all along the way, we have to use our bodies—and without muscles we don’t move.
So next time you catch yourself moving, you should realize: That’s doing exercise!
Whether or not we know it, things like climbing up a flight of stairs, taking out the trash, washing the dishes or mowing the lawn, are all forms of exercise. This multi-part article will teach you how to make the most out of them. Let GettingOutside show you the way to physical fitness and a newer, improved and more fit you!
When you’re finished reading this section, you will know how to work the different parts of your body by doing the things you already do—again, it happens naturally! You will learn to choose one muscle group to target (you'll go after either your biceps, triceps, calf-muscles or thighs, but usually only one at a time, though); and soon, you’ll be doing more fun outdoor things that have an aerobic element built into them. This will invariably lead you to better physical fitness and also help you achieve and maintain healthy weight (provided that you will eat a reasonably well-balanced and healthy number of foods, i.e. make good food choices). We have new articles on that too!
We’ll provide you with plenty of examples—both for good exercises and healthy food options—in the below and related sections!
Good luck, it’s almost time to begin...
But first, to fully meet our purpose of informing you about our uniquely designed and balanced plan of approach (and enlightening you in—our GettingOutside.com school of thought, aka.—The Naturalistic Workout), we have a few more things to discuss.
