Bear Stuck in Jug before being Shot

Bear Stuck in Jug has to be Shot - a sad story about a bear getting trapped by over consumption and wasteful ways.

The Associated Press reported a sad story today. A bear, its head trapped in a large plastic jug, had to be shot by Minnesota Wildlife Officials. They had tried for almost a week to capture and free it from the jug, but ended up killing the poor bear after it wandered into the town of Frazee during the busy Turkey Days celebration.

I watch a lot of nature shows, and no matter where they are, from Africa to Australia, from Europe to South America, they always seem to have a tranquilizer gun handy. How come these guys in Minnesota, USA weren’t prepared with a dart gun to take him down peacefully?

This bear didn’t show up completely unexpected. They had been looking for him for 6 days, You’d think they would have had some tranquilizer darts at the ready. Couldn’t they afford the equipment? Are they only equipped with high powered rifles and shot guns?

It just seems like there was something they could have done to prevent this. For instance if the darts weren’t available, maybe they could have tried to scare it back into the woods, then tracked it after they had the tranquilizers?

Of course, the traditional media didn’t seem to ask any tough questions like these, obvious though they were, so we’ll never know. They never ask smart questions anymore.

I guess the authorities could have argued that the dart guns were too far away, and that rather than scare the bear off into the woods, they decided to shoot it because they deemed it too stressed from dehydration, lack of food and panic from being stuck in a plastic jug. (This is sort of implied in the article, but we’ll never know for sure.)

Oh well, bear season opens in a month anyway…
